One of the trees that caught my attention at Yamato’s 42nd annual exhibit was an old procumbens juniper.
Procumbens juniper
I haven’t seen a lot of other trees like it. The trunk is mostly straight and the branches are long. The apex is rounded, and the density of foliage is very even. It’s a striking tree – what do you think about it?

Never did understand why all trunks had to be curved except for upright trees. Some trees with a straight section look very good to me.
I can see that most 90 degree turns don’t look natural. You don’t see many of them in nature.

You don’t see many procumbens that upright. It’s beautiful , but definately different than most bonsai of that variety.

low alpine spruce or fur look alike. very very interesting piece in my mind. well done and detail is just dead on.

This is what I call a ‘tree tree’ i.e. a natural looking tree. Not all junipers have to be twisted and gnarled

looks like a lot of our mature cedar trees. In that vein, I would like to see some of the two bottom branches jinned. Very nice tree.

Nice tree but the branches and trunk tell a different story, The branches look lush and as if the tree could sit in a nice pasture. The trunk has quite a lot of shari and looks like it has been fighting the elements. I think the tree could be improved by jinning a few branches to harmonise the two. There isn’t a lot of negative space!

Striking and attractive tree! Couldn’t care less whether it adheres to traditional rules of bonsai or not.

The branches belong to a young tree and the trunk belongs to an old tree. To me there is too much foliage for the aged looking trunk, removing several branches (especially lower branches) would make the composition more cohesive.
Zack Clayton says
A beautiful tree. The long drooping branches show the age along with the shari on the trunk. I agree it looks like a field tree, but around here, field trees are the ones that get a lot of attention from lightning as they are the tallest ones around. I do not find that to be inconsistent because I see it in nature.

This tree looks very perfect to me. From the trunk up to its leaves are very wonderful. The apex is round and evenly distributed. You did a great job in your juniper bonsai tree. Keep it up!
