Yamato Bonsai Kai 42nd Annual Exhibit

October 29, 2013 by Jonas Dupuich

Earlier this month, Yamato Bonsai Kai held their 42nd Annual Exhibit at the Southern Alameda County Buddhist Church in Union City, California. Yamato is one of the mainstay bonsai organizations of the Bay Area. The club’s sensei, Johnny Uchida, helped found Yamato in 1969, and in 1971 he opened Grove Way Bonsai Nursery in Hayward, CA. He is responsible for getting a tremendous number of people interested in bonsai and his contributions to the community are unparalleled.  I’ll pause here to say thanks, Johnny, for all of the outstanding work!

This year’s exhibit did a great job conveying the season with a mix of fall color and fruiting bonsai. The show was also strong on juniper so I’ll start there. Here are some of the stand-out maples and junipers on display.

Jonas, your pictures are always fantastic. Would you mind sharing what lens you use?

Thank you. I used a Nikon D90 with the 18-105mm kit lens. I use a tripod when I visit shows like this and then clean everything up in Lightroom.
