Common approach to writing about bonsai: photograph full tree, cut something, photograph less-full tree.
Mixing it up for a change, here is progress after spring cutback on my Yaupon holly. I’m focusing more than normal on how quickly this tree grows as I’d like to show it in January and I’d like to calculate how long ahead of time I’ll have to cut to make sure it looks full at show time.

Of course, I’ll have to adjust the timing a bit as the tree doesn’t grow as quickly in fall as it does in summer, but this gives me a rough idea of how long it takes for new shoots to mature.
