The larger bonsai displayed at the Bay Area Bonsai Associates’ 32nd annual exhibit filled the standalone displays in the exhibit hall. Each tree was shown with stand and accent and sometimes scroll.

the hokkaidos are interesting to me. i’ve never had good luck with them- the examples i’ve had sloughed off major branches. i ended up just avoiding them all together. these look old and well developed. is there some green alchemy of which i am unaware?

Good question Brad – I know others have had the same problem but I haven’t grown enough of them to know the cause. They remain a popular variety so I know it’s possible to keep them happy, I just don’t know the particulars beyond good soil and careful watering.
