Pot selection exercise – procumbens juniper

March 24, 2017 by Jonas Dupuich

The very last bonsai I repotted this season was a procumbens juniper. I knew finding a pot for the tree would be tricky because I remember struggling to find a good option three years ago when the tree was last repotted.

Here are the eleven options I came up with based on what I have in the garden – note your favorites below.

Michael Hagedorn – round

Yamaaki – round

Koshosen – round

Production Gyouzan – rectangle

Chinese antique nanban – round

Ryugaku – round

Gyouzan – rectangle

Yuuji – 8 sided

New Chinese – 8 sided

Japanese – 6 sided

Japanese – 6 sided (front showing 2 sides)

Check back Tuesday for photos of the pot I selected and notes about how the repotting went. Have a good weekend!

Jonas: Round Yamaaki or 8-sided Yuuji look great–such an embarrassment of riches!

      Yamaaki!

    In order of my preference:
    Yamaaki
    Production Gyouzan
Japanese 6 sided showing flat face.

The Nanban and Ryugaku look like the tree is leveraged out of the pot.

-Yamasaki – with two feet showing from front,
    – new Chinese 8 sided
    – Yuuji 8 sided but it appears a little to wide?

I love exercises like this as I have to think for myself. I prefer the Yamaaki round – graceful, feminine and the right size (I think).

    Hi Jonas,
I think your difficulty in choosing a pot comes from a confusing flow of the tree. It seems to want to flow to the right – in which case you would shorten the branches on the left. This would require the tree being potted on the left side of center rather than the right as shown. Once you have a strong flow, whether to the left or the right, it should become easy to see a round pot probably wouldn’t be suitable and it would open up other options 🙂

Awesome suggestion Carol – there will definitely be changes down the road along these lines. Thanks!

The Yamaaki just seems peaceful, harmonious.

I agree with the observation about the flow, can’t wait to see the future changes!

    Yuuji
Tree is far to delicate in feel for any of the others.

Yamaaki first choice, Yuuji, then Japanese 6 sides with flat front.
